"Any idea when you're chatting with Haim?" a text reads. "My request was to ask if I can be their newest bandmate."

However, there remains a key snag: The author likewise wants to be Haim's fourth member. And we're far from alone. Multiple high-profile fans have publicly begged for the role.

The evidence suggests something is happening. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana began their path doing sets at local delicatessens with their parents. Now they're multiple Grammy contenders.

Like all the best ensembles, they're a close trio. Their music videos often show them marching in sync down the streets of Los Angeles. On stage, they jam with such unfettered joy you inevitably think, "I'd love to be involved in that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that audience members approached us and said, 'Watching you live, I got a bass'," says Alana, the most junior of the trio. "It is the ultimate compliment. That's an award in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can motivate people to start a band."

"And thus anyone is invited to be the next Haim sister."

Grammy Recognition

The band are connecting from their homes, where they're recovering after an major tour in promoting their latest album, I Quit.

They're right now celebrating the news it's been nominated for a top rock honor at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the very first all-woman band ever in contention for the trophy.

"I follow the announcements every year, so it kind of feels like The Truman Show when your name is called," says Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I dreaming'?"

The significance of the honor isn't lost on the sisters.

"We truly set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a major step," says Alana. "However we're just grateful for the female artists that came before us."

Heartbreak and Humour

The project emerged from a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters ended up single, and the music inhabits that odd liminal space where you're happy to be free, but not yet ready to let go.

The words track departures and farewells. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've got. You can hear them determining in real life who they are becoming.

"I adore way of putting it, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a slogan. You have to actively work on ignoring the outside opinions and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Refinement of Music

That newfound toughness demanded a new sound – more raw and immediate than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that started with the drums.

"Percussion is such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our biography," laughs Alana. "I've said it, our albums don't start until we find the ideal drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Camaraderie

The trio's honesty inspired the album's marketing, where the sisters revealed some of their personal horror stories.

A former partner left Este over a medical consideration. Alana shared a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"When you're going through these breakups, you just feel like there's no hope," notes Alana. "Thus to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's so amazing."

A Secure Legacy

You can clearly sense a change in the band. Today, Haim are more certain of their position in the music world.

They're top-billed acts, with hit albums and an worldwide fan base.

Yet Haim will always be their primary commitment.

"We have been playing music since I was a young child," shares Alana. "There is no other path that we were supposed to do. And I'm really fortunate we've reached this point and we're still making music."
