The Mighty Nein's Introductory Sequence Chose the Wrong Critical Role Song
This latest animated series, the most recent animated series from the beloved role-playing group, revealed an exciting opening credits. It showcases the beloved cast of misfits, misfits, and criminals fighting hard and taking names, while teasing at multiple heart-wrenching personal histories for characters including the voice actor's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, the character Fjord.
Overall, the intro looks amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was missing in the song choice.
This sequence uses "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional song created by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. It's a track originating from the soundtrack album of that title, the second one put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful sentimental option, and I believe that devotees of the second campaign will appreciate its inclusion.
Personally, The Mighty Nein's intro fails to capture the excitement and excitement that accompanied the second campaign's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", composed by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit in my view when it was first revealed in 2015, and it only got better when co-founder Sam Riegel wrote words to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.
Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as the writer, the song was catchy and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series yet, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my phone. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an episode of adventurous fun.
The Mighty Nein's opening with "the new song" fails to hit the same chords in my opinion. It's a grand piece of music, but from what I know of this party, I feel that its mood is a little off.
Naturally, Critical Role has stated that the animated show will have a few changes and variations from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its opening seems to be one of them.
The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on the streaming service from Nov. 19. If you can't wait before that, or want a head start to get to know the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are available on Spotify and the video site.
