The Mayor-Elect affirms he will live in historic Gracie Mansion
New York City's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to live in the iconic Gracie Mansion, vacating his rent-controlled apartment that sparked debate throughout his run for office.
A Traditional Abode
Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the official residence for nearly all New York City mayors from the World War II era.
Yet, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a central issue, did not confirm this decision promptly after his victory in November.
"My choice came down to the security of my family and the importance of dedicating my full attention on carrying out the agenda for affordability the city's residents voted for," the Mayor-Elect declared in a statement.
A Fond Farewell
His home was in Astoria, Queens, a community famous for its diverse immigrant populations and international dining.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: many thanks for exemplifying the true spirit of New York City," he noted.
"While I may no longer live in Astoria, Astoria will always live within me and my work," he affirmed.
A Contentious Issue
In his election campaign, Mamdani tied his core platform – to freeze the rent – to his personal living arrangements.
But his rivals, including one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for remaining in the apartment although he hails from a famous family.
A House Not Always Used
Not every mayor have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, chose to live in his private home on the Upper East Side for his tenure, which ended in 2012.
Instead, Bloomberg felt it could serve as a venue for public city functions, and advocated for significant upgrades of the historic mansion.
A Grand New Home
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion near his first day on 1 January, he will experience an environment a stark contrast to his modest Astoria digs.
Adorned in pale yellow exterior, emerald shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure situated by the East River.
Within, the ground floor of the historically styled mansion is furnished consistent with the home's historical period.
The property, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also boasts increased security measures to safeguard the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
A number of people have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.
Chirlane McCray, the wife of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors would sometimes open and closed by themselves, and the floorboards creaked eerily.
The departing mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "It doesn't matter what anyone says," he stated in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."
A Critical Policy Issue
Mamdani's current apartment is under rent control, which means the city sets limits on how much building managers can raise the rent each year.
City residents consider these apartments essential protections as the housing expenses rises faster than the means of many residents.
Data indicated Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from the property website Zillow, the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
