The Game UN:Me: A Psychological Thriller That Blends Silent Hill with Among Us Mechanics
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed several intriguing upcoming titles, but one in particular has captured attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure appears to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"This is a distinctive experience where a girl harboring several personalities within her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the mind," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Shattered Mind
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of high school age. Inside her exist four distinct souls, all possessing unique anxieties and motivations. These souls can seize control spontaneously, unleashing their innermost terrors upon her suddenly.
Based on revealed gameplay, much of the action unfolds within a eerie medical facility, though other scenes show the main character exploring a desolate chapel.
A World of Individual Horror
"What makes you fearful of? What causes you uncomfortable?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. Authority figures. Things that seem trivial to others can activate something primal inside us. This game explores that concept — fears that are specific to each person."
The core gameplay loop revolves around managing whichever soul emerges at any given moment. However, these souls will change involuntarily during gameplay. During exploration, every persona's anxieties become exaggerated and assault the girl one after another. When the soul changes, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Unsettling Visuals and a Fatal Decision
Initially, UN:Me shares noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The setting is filled with orderlies all sporting the identical visage, with disturbingly broad smiles. Figures in the lobby have enormous flowers where their necks should be. Flowers are a recurring element, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique mechanic. Players must determine which of the four souls haunting the protagonist is the "real" one. "All four souls asserts that the physical form is rightfully them," explains a creator. "During the game, you must determine who is authentic."
After a player have deduced a persona is fake, they are forced to destroy it. But, since each soul can deceive or hide the reality, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the real [soul] by your own actions," the narration suggests. "The last one standing might be a fake. Either way, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced release date, but it is can be follow on digital storefronts.
