Senegal's Rising Star Lamine Camara: Starting from Aspirations to Tournament Favorites.
When I walk into the space, the young midfielder picks up a soccer ball he won’t let go of throughout the conversation. This serves as a simple visual metaphor for a ambition he has always held onto. “My sole focus was the beautiful game; I was focused solely on that,” states the AS Monaco and Senegal midfielder.
His resolve and natural ability convinced clubs like Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. Yet, the most difficult person to convince didn't come from a club executive or coach, but his own father. “He was against me playing soccer simply because he had never watched me,” explains Camara.
Overcoming Initial Obstacles
Eventually, on “a special day,” he received his dad's approval to chase his path in the sport. Another challenge was his modest frame, which deterred local club Casa Sports from offering him a contract.
However, the famed academy – the club that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. After Camara was named the best player in a regional tournament, the scouts were “shocked” to learn he was not tied down. They acted quickly. “I was taken straight to the academy. They didn’t want me from returning home,” Camara said.
A Landmark Year and Continental Breakthrough
That decision set him on a pathway to Europe. His breakthrough was 2023, “an unforgettable year,” which began with Camara winning the African Nations Championship. Just weeks later, though tired, he played in the U-20 Africa Cup, guiding his nation to victory and being named player of the tournament.
A month later, he was unveiled as FC Metz, emulating Mané. “Adapting was never a challenge,” says the 21-year-old. He resides alone in Europe, a situation his relatives support to maintain his concentration.
Inspiration and Playing Style
Off-field noise aren't a problem for Camara, who draws inspiration from the Belgian maestro's “humility” and exceptional skills. Additionally, he's a big admirer of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His powerful shot and accuracy from set pieces are key strengths. Camara confesses a need to control his aggression, having been shown red at the start of his spells at each French club. “It's a trait that is following me!” he jokes.
Life at Monaco, Teammates and Future Goals
With his current club, he values learning from veterans such as Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “When I heard about the interest in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” Camara noted.
Right now, his focus is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – there's no denying it. If you beat England on their soil…,” he says, referencing a historic 3-1 victory in Nottingham.
On a potential future move to the English top flight, he is committed to Monaco at present. “I feel really comfortable here,” he insists. He is often ribbed by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Best Young Player awards. Camara jokes, but is serious about winning the main top prize down the line.
“The pressure is on us – we can’t hide from that. Having beaten England at Wembley… it instills belief.”
Looking ahead, Lamine Camara blends humble beginnings, steely determination, and big dreams targeting to guide Senegal to continental glory and build his own lasting legacy in the world of football.
