Antony Price, Famed for Creating Looks for Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer who crafted some of the most iconic looks worn by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died at 80 years old.
His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, including the light-hued ensembles that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."
His passing follows shortly after he presented his newest line in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen showcased a dress inspired by the iconic black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to study at the renowned Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he commenced his career designing menswear at Stirling Copper and was behind the form-fitting, button-fly pants that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show was launched by outfits on supermodel Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A frequent collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the memorable jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to blend menswear and womenswear along with his masterful technique in designing body-hugging looks cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he started creating pieces for Camilla, now Queen Consort, which included several ensembles for her US tour after assuming the title.
With a vocation that covered more than five decades, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London just last month in conjunction with the label 16Arlington.
