Adult Swim's Top New Show of This Year Gets a Significant Extension for Two More Seasons.

Last October, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the network unveiled a brand-new animated series with a distinctly unique vibe. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, in the spirit of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. In an era often marked by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and propelled it a surprise hit.

A Major Commitment

In mid-December, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two more seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to develop the world of the Campbell family. The series centers on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.

"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and spread the word," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for seasons to come."

Network Praise

Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and supported its peculiarly charming sensibility.

"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. It offers something deeply soothing about observing this charming family go about their everyday routines.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to move the comedy genre beyond its current sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

Future Seasons

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa may well catalyze that comedic shift. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences a little more time to experience the gentle humor of the endearing Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
